1. Don’t be discouraged by the rapid growth of eCommerce
As mentioned previously, it is a common misconception that the eCommerce industry is overloaded, and this tends to deter people from turning an amazing idea in to reality. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, eCommerce sales increased to nearly £40 billion in one year.
I am encouraging you to take advantage of the current shift and launch your business whilst the iron is still hot! Find your unique selling point and market, market, market!
2. Plan and make sure your business is scalable
Due to the fast-paced increase of eCommerce, you need to create a working plan that makes sure your company will constantly evolve. Create this with your top business goals in mind, for example brand awareness and boosting sales.
Make sure to include competitor analysis, product reviews, customer journey and more. Perhaps what was once an original idea has now been replicated, so you need to rework your model to distinguish a strong unique selling point that will capture your target market. Every business should be scalable, there is always room for development!
3. Invest in a digital presence
People will not buy your products unless they can see them. Did you know it takes a person on average 7 times to see something before acknowledging or purchasing the item? From social media profiles to websites, increasing visibility and building trust in your target market is key to success within the eCommerce world!
4. Enter your business venture with expectations of trial and error
We believe that it is important to understand potential setbacks and stumbling blocks that can occur when setting up and launching your own business.
You might trial some content that your target audience doesn’t engage with or find that they are not overly present on certain social media channels. However, I would advise trialling a marketing method for at least one month before stopping. Sometimes the statistics don’t immediately skyrocket but over the course of the month you will see something working. It is then a matter of understanding what worked and how you can make it better.
5. Understand your target market, your audience should not be everyone
As I’ve mentioned previously, understanding who exactly you’re targeting and how you can best reach them is crucial. Look at the demographics of the marketing methods you’re planning to use, social media sites, email campaigns and more. Make sure they’re going to reach your prospect customers.
Knowing your target market will also help create your tone of voice. If you’re wanting to create a friendly community, adopt a conversational tone. Whereas, if it is a more corporate relationship, your language will differ. Learn more about tone of voice here.
6. Most niche products work the best
Differentiation is key in eCommerce. If you have a product idea but you don’t think anyone will be interested, I can guarantee that with the right marketing campaign you will reach an audience who want your product.
We recommend creating a niche product because you can target a more specific audience. If you created a make-up brush, it would be extremely hard to establish your business in an already crowded product space.
7. Market online before the product is ready to be sold (AKA a prelaunch strategy)
Building momentum around your brand is an amazingly effective marketing tool. Increase excitement and draw in the interest of the buyer before presenting them with a product.
Businesses tend to do this with competitions, exclusive drops, discounts for signing up to email subscription and more. Tell your audience why they will need your product and tease that USP until the last minute.
8. Story telling
Telling the story of your brand is vital when connecting with your audience. People buy from people!
Showing up on your social media, connecting directly with your customers and showing them where their products come from works well.
Every brand has a story, don’t be afraid to tell yours!
9. Customer service is key
Not only is excellent customer service one of the most important aspects to success, with it comes word of mouth.
People will talk about your brand in a positive light, increasing brand awareness and recognition.
Who would you trust more, a business owner raving about their products or a friend recommending the product to you? It is probably a mixture of both, but word of mouth marketing is so powerful in generating sales and building a presence in the industry.
10. There is no better time than the present
If you are wanting to build the brand of dreams, you need to start now. You will always be able to find excuses as to why ‘now is not the right time’ but you’re just preventing yourself from starting something special.
Start building the foundations, create an unbeatable marketing campaign and success will follow…
